Uber 3 management lessons we can learn from the scandal

Uber 3 administration exercises we can gain from the embarrassment Uber 3 administration exercises we can gain from the outrage On Tuesday, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick reported an inconclusive time away around the same time his company discharged the proposals of an inward examination concerning its working environment culture, particularly around its treatment of women. The organization began the examination after a previous designer at Uber, Susan Fowler, asserted inappropriate behavior, segregation - and a HR division that overlooked these claims.Kalanick, 40, has gained notoriety for brash leadership and congested awful kid conduct including nicknaming the organization Boober for how it helped his dating life. The organization has been seeing how Kalanick's conduct tends to stream down to different officials, and therefore he had been working with an official mentor and taking up contemplation before he went on leave this current week.Kalanick's stamp on Uber is unavoidable, showing the intensity of an official's way to deal with structure the way of life of an organization. Uber is just about a $70 billion o rganization, and it arrived through Kalanick's administration style of not letting anything-legal claims over work rehearses for drivers, God see reconnaissance of its clients' private information, rehashed lewd behavior charges by its officials, and government guidelines disrupt the general flow of the organization's growth. Now, the organization is paying for it. Here are three exercises we can figure out how we can utilize Uber as a contextual analysis on avoidable mismanagement.1. Make esteems you can be pleased with and satisfy themUber had a lot of qualities. Lamentably, they were really forceful and boosted representatives to treat each other severely in the quest for their very own prosperity. These rough aphorisms roused representatives to act with impunity.Among those qualities, which sound ready for struggle: Let Builders Build, Consistently Be Hustlin', Meritocracy and Toe-Stepping, and Principled Confrontation. One of the proposals from the Eric Holder-drove examination w as to take out those qualities which have been recognized as repetitive or as having been utilized to legitimize poor behavior. It's not surprising that under the working environment culture of Meritocracy and Toe-Stepping, a top Uber official would feel constrained to acquire and keep the clinical records of a Uber driver's assault casualty he accepted may be lying. That official was among the many individuals the organization fired after the law office's examination revealed numerous occurrences of lewd behavior, counter and amateurish behavior. What's noteworthy about that: the high number of individuals being accounted for and terminated shows that this harmful work culture was encouraged and empowered by Uber's forceful culture. And for the conventional individuals that stay at Uber, working in this condition despite everything influences their current state of mind and future business openings. New York Times' journalist Mike Isaac said recruiting supervisors were careful about e mploying individuals who worked at Uber after the scandals. It's an update that even when you're not straightforwardly adding to its harmfulness, a bad workplace culture still legitimately impacts you. likewise am being told many individuals are stopping every week within Uber. wearing down is getting to them. - rodent ruler (@MikeIsaac) June 13, 20172. Tune in to your workers' interests early and oftenThis cerebral pain of an inward examination could have been maintained a strategic distance from if the executives had tuned in to Fowler's interests sooner. She adhered to the best possible procedures to be heard and said she was excused and overlooked. At the point when she announced a worker who was constraining her to engage in sexual relations with him, she was told by HR that they wouldn't do anything since he was a high performer. To fix this behavior, Uber would need to change how it treats reactions and grumblings. It would need to make an enabling domain where representatives like Fowler could step forward without fear. Now Uber needs to make that culture at any rate - yet in a truly debilitated position they could have maintained a strategic distance from on the off chance that they had quite recently tuned in any case. Uber's answer: The inside examination suggested executing a vig orous and compelling grievance process that would incorporate numerous roads for housing a grumbling, including a representative's prompt supervisor or next-level administrator, the association's Human Resources Business Partner, or the Integrity Helpline.3. Have zero capacity to bear rowdiness, especially at the topCreating zero-resilience approaches for provocation and discrimination is an essential HR practice that ought to be sufficiently simple to follow, and it was what the examination recommended. But as one Uber board part appeared, practices don't change overnight. In the quick consequence of the suggestions being discharged, board part Arianna Huffington talked about what Uber strategies could be changed before workers. At the point when she said that including progressively female board individuals prompts more ladies joining sheets, her individual board part David Bonderman reacted with a chauvinist comment: Really, what it demonstrates is that it's significantly more pron e to be more talking.Bonderman left the board hours after sound of the trade had been spilled. The fast reaction to his comments shows that post-examination, senior initiative will be considered increasingly responsible out in the open. That is something beneficial for Uber, despite the fact that Kalanick despite everything remains CEO. Despite the fact that Kalanick himself was not prescribed to leave, the examination closed that Uber ought to diminish his responsibilities.Overall, the suggestions are a useful example of what happens when you let organizers and superior workers pull off terrible conduct for a really long time. With the arrival of its proposal, Uber is flagging that it will change. The truth will surface eventually if these composed guarantees will prompt action. For now, tidying up your act means cleaning house.

What's more, in case you're searching for a work-from-home employment, it can appear that the Internet is immersed with work postings that are professing to be real postings, yet are extremely simply fake posts from would-be con artists. Generally, individuals perceive these excessively eager, shout pointed posts as a potential pursuit of employment trick. They additionally know perhaps the greatest indication of a vocation trick is being approached to surrender your hard-won cash so as to get recruited. In any case, that is the place it can get precarious. In an article on The Balance, How to Tell If a Job Is a Scam, it expresses the accompanying: Don't pay cash for anything. … Don't send cash for work at home catalogs, counsel on getting recruited, organization data or for whatever else identified with an occupation. This is consistent with a degree. You shouldn't need to pay forthright with expectations of getting recruited, nor should you need to give out your Social Security number, ledger data, or some other private data to a likely manager, particularly when you haven't experienced the employing procedure (i.e., rounds of prospective employee meetings, submitting proposals, etc). Those who require this data will in general be work tricks, however that stated, there are additionally many authentic employment related destinations and administrations out there that are not tricks. These three focuses ought to be mulled over when evaluating any potential job search trick: You may need to burn through cash on your pursuit of employment. Dishing out cash, particularly when you're not working, can be especially excruciating. Be that as it may, there are times when you may need to make a money related interest in your pursuit of employment, for example, continue training or headhunting. You may even search out the administrations of a lifelong guide, put resources into pursuit of employment books, or pay for specialty work showcase destinations (like ). These, and others, are outfitted towards helping individuals improve their odds of discovering, landing, and getting a charge out of work… and a significant number of these assets cost cash. From a vocation searcher point of view, it's cash all around spent on the off chance that it improves your pursuit of employment experience and causes you find work. Don't excuse it just in light of the fact that there is an expense, and rather assess every circumstance on its own legitimacy. Because it's free does NOT mean it's protected. The sad truth is that on most free places of work, there are work tricks, unrealistic business openings, and garbage advertisements blended in with the activity postings or in the paid promotions in the sidebar. A considerable lot of the tricks act like free chances, with the goal of getting your own data for personality misrepresentation or charge card robbery. You may never pay a penny, however you could at present lose a great deal. Do some examination. Before you even contact the individual recorded hands on posting, you ought to do your examination. Look at the association on the Better Business Bureau's site to check whether it is a) genuine and b) has any grumblings recorded against it. In the event that it's an organization that you're not so much acquainted with, you ought to do your due ingenuity on the web and see what data is out there as the organization's site and web based life nearness. (In the event that the organization has neither one of the its, could be an indication that the organization isn't genuine.) You can even Google the organization's name and trick to check whether anything comes up. While The Balance article represents some valid statements, it may have been exceptional to state, Don't pay to get employed, in light of the fact that that is in every case valid. Authentic managers will never ask candidates to pay so as to land employed for the position. Also, any individual who vows to get you employed ought to be seen pretty incredulously, and you ought to consistently do your exploration on the organization. In spite of the fact that you may choose to make a monetary interest in your pursuit of employment and vocation, it ought to basically never be to pay a business to recruit you. Dont Take No for an Answer

Dont Take No for an Answer No doesnt truly mean no. It just methods I am not happy enough to state yes now. Lets toughen up a bit. Rejection is something we are on the whole terrified of! For what reason wont you get the telephone and call that individual, follow up on that lead, connect with a past collaborator? Are you not certain what youll say? Heres what I know. If you have a content or diagram of how you will present yourself and what you are explicitly asking of them, youll feel much better. The more frequently you do this, the simpler it will get, I promise. I used to do B2B selling. Be Prepared for complaints You will experience individuals who dont realize how to help you. Thats why you should be clear. Have you at any point heard these: I dont know about any employments I dont do the employing Your reaction could be: That is really awful, at the same time, I am really searching for individuals to have a discussion with so I can get familiar with XYZ organization (Q industry or P occupation). On the off chance that you were me, who do you figure I ought to address? Keep Control At the point when you permit somebody to help out for you, youve lost all control. By and large it is better for you to offer to do the legwork or make the call. Otherwise, you realize what will happen. That good natured companion just doesnt have a similar arrangement of needs you do. It might take them days or weeks to get to it. Offer to de-trouble them so you wont feel like a vermin when you need to call them in up to 14 days. Persistant versus Pest Theres a barely recognizable difference here. However, no two individuals see things a remarkable same way. Do not utilize your own specific channel to decide what others may see as pesky. If you are genuine in your solicitation and it isnt nasty, you ought to be OK. Presently, it is up to you This week, make little strides outside of your solace zone. Push yourself. See what occurs. Call each name you are given for the current week. Call them! Request that 2 individuals meet with you to talk about your objective organizations. Discover the recruiting directors for the occupations youve applied to and call them to ask where they are in the audit procedure. Are you trusting that somebody will hit you up call each one of those individuals this week. Dont hold up one more day.

PssstRobots are After Your Job - Workology

“Pssst…Robots are After Your Job” “Pssst…Robots are After Your Job” Will your job be extinct in 50 years? WIRED magazine thinks so. Its 2012 cover story (“The Robot Takeover”) predicts that by the end of this century, over 70% of existing jobs will be automatedâ€"to include most traditionally “white collar” professions.  Journalism, education, law, medicineâ€"all of these are fields that are already experiencing the birth pangs of a “second wave” of automation. How worried should we be? “Pssst…Robots are After Your Job” Don’t panic. To a farmer in the 1800s, most of today’s jobs would seem unimaginably futuristic. Over the next 50 years, we can expect a lot of changes in the workforce…but there is plenty that we can do to prepare ourselves.  1. Embrace Uncertainty. Automation can’t occur until a process has been defined, refined, and hard-coded. In other words, robots can only do what humans learn to do first. While we can expect that machines will obtain intelligence, that intelligence will be limited to solving problems around established laws, algorithms, and principles. For the foreseeable future anyway, humans are best at navigating new waters. We are explorers by nature. This is why I believe project management should be a skill listed on everyone’s resume. Projects, by definition, are endeavors into the unknown. Operations (the opposite of projects) is about defining and refining essential processes. The end-game of a project to innovate something newâ€"literally to “produce a unique product, service, or result.” 2. Embrace Automation. As new machines or software enters your industry, embrace it. For you HR folks, think about the first time you encountered Applicant Tracking Software. Here was a system that was able to cull through thousands of resume to filter out the most qualified applicants, all the while communicating to each one about their application status. How many of you were worried that your job was in danger? Hopefully, none of youâ€"because as automation took over your defined processes, you were able to focus on other important functions previously neglected: for example, building company cultures conducive to risk and innovation. 3. Embrace People. We may one day live in a world where Androids resemble humans in every respect…but for now, the one thing that machines can’t replicate is empathy. Office Holiday Parties

Office Holiday Parties I recently asked an employment lawyer for their top tips on handling the office holiday party. Here are 4 tips from employment lawyer Sarah Vokey of Robinson Heeney LLP in Toronto, ON. Its that time of year again decorations, snow, wishes of joy, gifts, baked treats, and of course, the office holiday party. While the office holiday party is a great opportunity to connect with co-workers and celebrate the year, an employees conduct during the event can have ramifications that extend long after the event is finished. As employment lawyers, we are often called upon in our practice to assist with dealing with holiday party behaviour and, based on our experience, have compiled the following tips for employees attending such events: Do not forget that the office holiday party, even if held outside the office or outside of regular working hours, constitutes the workplace. This means that all company policies and expectations of conduct in the office also apply to the office party. Conduct that violates company policies that occurs at the holiday party can be, and often is, subject to investigation and disciplinary measures. Limit alcohol consumption. Case law involving holiday parties where excessive alcohol has been consumed is full of situations involving poor judgment such as harassment, inappropriate comments, and physical violence. Not only do these situations have the ability to negatively impact an employees reputation but they can also result in serious disciplinary measures up to and including termination of employment. If alcohol will be consumed, ensure that safe transportation from the party is arranged in advance. For example, obtain the number of a taxi service or inquire into the companys policy on paying for transportation home from the party. Unless otherwise advised, employees are expected to show up for work the day after the holiday party. Happy holidays!

Youre ready for your video interview, what could possibly go wrong

You're prepared for your video meet, what might turn out badly You're prepared for your video meet, what might turn out badly Try not to like being met on record? Incline toward an in-person meeting? All things considered, as indicated by Chris Brown, Vice President of Human Resources at West Corporation, you are in a tight spot. Video meeting is digging in for the long haul. Love it (most Millennials) or abhor it (a considerable lot of all of us) we've all got the chance to show signs of improvement at it. Also, showing signs of improvement at it signifies dodging a portion of the entanglements that are inalienable in this sort of virtual cooperation. So when I talked with Brown a week ago, I was anxious to hear his tips.Carol Kinsey Goman: After all the meetings you've led by means of video, I'm certain you've seen a lot of conceivably profession constraining mistakes. Would you be able to give me a schedule of how to best get ready for the sorts of specialized glitches that can wreck an interview?Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Sati sfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Chris Brown: Here are a couple of essential strides to follow.Give yourself a lot of time to set up and test meeting gear before the interviewTo ensure your innovation is good, do a dry run before your meeting. Video get a companion and test out the clearness and sound of your video visit. Calling into the meeting early additionally allows you to ensure all gear is working appropriately and test for availability issues. At long last, giving yourself an additional couple of moments will assist you with feeling increasingly quiet and sure toward the beginning of the call.Be proactiveIf your PC needs rebooting, ensure you do that before the meeting starts. Closing down projects you don't require during the call stays away from potential alarms or pop-ups and shields your PC from getting impeded. By and large, a wired association is superior to a remote association, so use landlines or Ethernet links when conceivable to stay away from signal issues. Ensu re your sound quality is solid. I think the headset works best.Share huge and significant records beforehand. If you're intending to share or go over large documents with the questioner, send them in advanceNot just will this assistance you get ready, yet it will likewise lessen the probability that pieces get lost â€" either in the web or in other members' inboxes â€" while on the call.Skip the free telephone call servicesWhile free administrations can appear to be extremely engaging, free for the most part implies low quality and irregularity which can leave a terrible impact on your clients. In contrast to free administrations, confided in suppliers not just own the framework they work, they work at fragmentary ability to guarantee top occasions are secured and administration conveyance is steady. While you don't generally have authority over which video gathering administration the questioner utilizes if conceivable check whether they have undertaking grade administrations you c an use.Work through glitchesIf glitches are minor, attempt your best to overlook them and continue pushing ahead. Nonetheless, if innovation issues are obtrusive and forestalling powerful correspondence, recognize and apologize for the issue. On the off chance that video is giving you inconvenience, have a go at changing to sound as it were. What's more, ensure you have the number for technical support or client care nearby. Put forth a valiant effort to continue talking while they work to fix problems.Always have an elective method to connectIf you are apprehensive about having network issues, it's savvy to impart your contact data to your questioner previously, either through email or in the visit component of the item that you are utilizing. That way, your questioner has an approach to contact you in the event that specialized glitches keep the meeting from going as arranged. Ensure you have the data and certainty to dial in the two different ways. Being set up to change to Plan B spares times and vitality when you're attempting to recover your meeting on target. Blackouts occur. Request a telephone number and have an email tended to, up, and prepared to send if there is a problem.Goman: What is the most irritating specialized slip-up a candidate has made in a meeting with you?Brown: Well, I don't have the foggiest idea whether you'd call this specialized, however one candidate booked the meeting while his home was being revamped and we needed to stop a few times because of the sawing commotion of worker cutting drywall. In spite of the fact that he was sorry for the interferences, it was disturbing in light of the fact that I felt as if he barely cared about my time that he was unable to be tried to make different courses of action. (Note: This goes under an extended classification that Brow has named Don't Be That Story, and outlines why it is imperative to do everything you can to cause the meeting to go smoothly.Goman: Which raises the issue of where we should set up our PC for the interview.Brown: Yes, the setting is significant â€" particularly in the event that it ends up being an interruption. A plain foundation works best. Additionally know about the lighting â€" and how it might change during the day, contingent upon where you are setting up. What's more, no pets or infants, please.Goman: Okay, we have the specialized side secured. What else should an applicant in a video meet get ready for?Brown: I think the main thing to remember is that not normal for an in-person meet, where a manually written note is all the proof of what you stated, this communication is being recorded. You have to foresee that your meeting will be imparted to other invested individuals. At the point when you answer interrogates you have to think concerning what others in the recruiting procedure should get notification from you. Also, on the off chance that you are approached back for a second round, don't be shocked on the off chance that you are app roached to develop something you said beforehand. So be prepared.Goman: I comprehend the significance of impression the board in any meeting. How is this distinctive in a virtual setting?Brown: Just an of every an eye to eye talk with, early introductions matter. A ton. That is the reason you should be in fact associated early. On the off chance that you are late, the questioner's observation is that you are not readied â€" or you basically couldn't care less. What's more, a questioner is dazzled when it is obvious that you've has gotten your work done and can quietly show your insight into the organization's history, incentive, or ongoing item declaration. Make sure to address the camera and not the image with the goal that you'll give the impression of looking. Grin. HR experts need forthcoming workers to be energetic and show great, positive vitality. (Note: One of Brow's proposals is to tune in to upbeat music as a feature of getting ready for the meeting. My recommendations inc orporate power presenting â€" like Superman or Wonder Woman â€" for two minutes before the meeting and perusing a rundown of your triumphs to prime your brain).Goman: Is there anything you need to include that I haven't asked?Brown: There is one progressively significant hint: Just in light of the fact that you are leading the meeting in the solace of your home, don't treat it delicately. Be authentic, act naturally, however don't get messy. This is a conference. Resemble an expert. Dress and behave as you would if the setting were more corporate.Goman: Thank you so much! This article previously showed up on Forbes.

Heres are a few examples of how to make an employer brand video that stands out. 2. Culture photos No stock photos, please. Id recommend  integrating your Instagram page on your page, so candidates can have a quick skim through snapshots of your companys employees and activities. Just like videos, job seekers really want to see a genuine picture of what its like to work for your company and what goes on every day. 3. Make it social A very simple, but effective necessity  for your careers page. The key here is the power of word of mouth. People trust people they know. You want people to be able to spread the word on working at your company on all sorts of social media like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and more. It is imperative you get these social share buttons at the top of your careers page, not the bottom. Visibility is very important. 4. Integrate your ATS Get whatever ATS system you use integrated into your website in order to maintain and update your career page at all times. There are tons of tools like Bullhorn, BambooHR, Recruitee and Workable that remove the hassle of updating your page in case you dont have the time to. 5. Make it mobile friendly Heres a quick stat: 86% of current job seekers use their phones to search for jobs nowadays. In all honesty, I think the  percentage is even higher now. Think of all the different  mobile devices people use from smartphones to iPads. So its imperative your careers page is optimized for mobile and offers a seamless  experience for prospective candidates. 6. Add a search function Often a forgotten function of a careers, page, make sure to allow candidates to search your website for more information. Importantly a search function helps your candidate find the answers they need, so they are able to make informed decisions about working for your company. Its a very simple function to add to your careers page but plays a big part in the candidates over experience. 7. Always include a CTA This is the big one. You should always have a call-to-action function on your page. Its extremely important ou have these three key CTAs: Social sharing buttons   As mentioned earlier, highly visible buttons for candidates to share your page. Contact us form: A form for prospective candidates to ask a question by including their name, email, and message. Apply here button:  A Direct link to your available jobs and the application process. Without these, why would you even have a careers page? If people fall in love with your company and want to do something about, CTAs are the best way to do so. Follow these quick tips so that youre actually utilizing the potential of having a careers page, and hopefully you will see an increase in applicants, as well as a better quality and fit of applicants.

What Social Media Teaches Us About Leadership

What Social Media Teaches Us About Leadership I am really struck at the moment with how frequently leadership is cried out for in the media. According to the media, we are looking for leaders in our political worlds (now there’s a vain hope!), in our economic world (wherever that is!) and in our banking and fiscal management world (God help us all!). What really makes me curious is â€" what do we mean by this call for leadership? What are we looking for in our leaders? What do we actually want our leaders to do? Because of the nature of my work I spend a lot of time around leaders in business so it is a subject that fascinates me. Working with management teams in a wide variety of industries it does intrigue me that the perception of what good leadership looks like varies greatly. For some, it is the General Patton style with all the charisma, rhetoric and powerful personality that goes with it. For others it is the Mother Teresa approach, who leads by example and who she is. But, hey, the two are pretty different! So, what has this got to do with social media? Well, while this thought process was creeping around my brain, I was studying quite a bit about social media and the key elements in building a profile in that world. Distilling quite a bit from various experts the general consensus is that the key ingredients are: Build relationships Share selflessly Listen to the conversation Engage with your audience. In truth you can encapsulate it all in “building relationships”. You can only build long lasting relationships if you do share selflessly, are a good listener and you continuously engage! That was when I had my Eureka moment about the connection between leadership and social media, and how we must apply the same principles in both areas of our world. You see leadership is not about the rhetoric, the eloquent speeches that can be quoted endlessly, the cries to battle that bring tears to the eyes or the charismatic personality. When we cry out for leadership we are looking for someone that we can trust, someone that we can have a relationship with, someone who will listen to us and someone I believe is looking out for me. So, what does this mean for me, for you, for all of us in our leadership roles? It matters not whether we lead one person, 100 or 10,000 â€" the principle is exactly the same. We must build relationships, share selflessly, listen to the conversation and engage with our audience. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Well it isn’t and it takes time, effort and consistency. When I was being trained as a manager was much time spent on how to build real relationships? Not at all! It was all about setting objectives and measuring results â€" that was the order of the day. Sadly, it still is in many quarters. That is not enough anymore. The people we lead are not just machines who churn out completed objectives â€" they are people with lives, dreams, aspirations, and problems! If we are to lead these people we must understand all there is about them? How much time have we spent building that knowledge? That’s right, building relationships! We must turn the tables and not look at what they are delivering â€" we must look at what we are delivering to them. How are we serving them? How much time are we giving to them to help them succeed? That’s right â€" sharing selflessly! How much time are we spending listening to the conversation about our business? Do we listen to our people? Do we listen to our customers? Do we listen to our competitors (or maybe just eavesdrop!)? That’s right â€" really listening to what they are saying! Do we lead from a distance because we were taught all those years ago that “you must keep your distance, or there will be no respect” (God, what rubbish is that!)? Or are we there in the middle of what is happening and fully involved in everything that is going on? That’s right â€" fully engaged! So, my wandering into the study of social media certainly helps to clarify my thinking of what I mean by leadership and when I cry out for it, what exactly I am looking for. So, when you cry out for leadership, what are you looking for?

11 The support groups start at 5pm sharp

Wall Street after 9/11 The support groups start at 5pm sharp In New York, a town where one third of the workers worked downtown, and more than one third were affected by the twin tower attacks, one of the best places to network is at trauma groups. You have to interview to get in a group. Not because theyre exclusive, but because peoples experiences are so different and the groups, apparently, are most effective if people have similar experiences. There are groups for people who lost a spouse and there are groups for people who sat in their apartment in Queens watching TV. The group I got put in is filled with people who escaped from their offices by dodging splattering body parts of jumpers. I am the curious standout in the group. As the other members were running away, I was walking closer. I am the authority on what it was like to suffocate under fallen debris. After a few sessions, though, we all knew each others stories, and we all found we were in the same place: Tying to reacclimatize ourselves to the world, which for everyone, included somehow getting back to five days  a week at work. Most people are still employed, at the large, or small-but-largely-affected firms youve probably read about, like Marsh McLennen or Cantor-Fitzgerald. One guy, from a large trading firm, has a cube next to someone who has cried every day for three months but has not gone to counseling. Is it appropriate to suggest counseling? Normally, a suggestion like this would be out of line, but the group agrees that in this case, it would be okay. A woman in the group was caught in the subway, under the tower when the second plane hit. People panicked and could not decide to get off or not and the doors jammed. Now she wont get on the subway, so her commute from the Bronx is three bus transfers and a ten-block walk. She is often late to work and she is scared its affecting her performance. People in the group gently tell her how they overcame transportation fears. But we all admit to having formed weird transportation rituals to ward off flashbacks. Sometimes someone remembers something new, and its horrifying: When I fell, I got hit by a severed hand. Sometimes the reports are gossipy, and its fun to be an insider: A woman I know was burned on 40% of her body and survived, and her high-profile trading company pays her only $170 a week for disability. (We all concur that the company is scum.) Some of us are looking for jobs. One guy who worked at a brokerage firm decided to take a severance package rather than commute to the new office in New Jersey. He said hes sick of information technology and he wants to work in a nonprofit. The social worker gave him a list of possibilities. One guy kept talking about his wife who worked in human resources at a big company in tower two. Every time he talks about her â€" her phone call, her escape â€"- I hear human resources. Finally, I asked him if I could send my resume to her. He gave me her email address and her work and home numbers. I sent the resume, (and my friend, who is not in the group, said, Oh god, I just interviewed there. I asked the hiring manager what he liked about the company and he said, Do you mean now or before all my friends died?') One guy quit his job because even a month after the attacks his boss still had not even mentioned the World Trade Center to him. This guy worked in a building that had one side blown off. That means theres enough of the building left for him to go collect his belongings. His company scheduled collection times with the cleanup crew. The guy in my group went last week. He said it was creepy to go back because the buildings he went to every day were gone. But it was worth it, he said, because right before the attacks he had ordered PaintShop Pro furtively, for personal use. He stole it when he went back to Ground Zero. When he said that, the group laughed. A was sign of normalcy, the social worker said. A sign of hope to all of us.

Is This a Resume-Building Internship or a Waste of Time

Is This a Resume-Building Internship or a Waste of Time 25 Flares 25 Flares Dave Ellis is an original member of the YouTern team where serves as the Content and Community Manager, and enjoys his role as the company’s “Man Behind the Curtain”. In his spare time, Dave volunteers, rescuing and rehabilitating sea lions and baby elephant seals. Connect with Dave on  LinkedIn  and follow him on  Twitter!   Ideally, by now you’ve heard the news â€"  internships are no longer optional. Having some professional experience under you when you graduate is necessary to present yourself as a competitive job candidate. There’s no such thing as “just gimme a chance” in a recruiter’s world. They need to hire someone with the necessary skills, who’s ready to start today. “Ok, so I’ll just go out and get some internships on my resume” you think. Problem solved. Sure you’ll have experience on your resume. But if your internships are low quality â€" the stereotypical “coffee and copies” internships â€" when recruiters read your resume… when you answer questions during the interview… during any one of the steps in the hiring process, you’ll quickly be found out. And if somehow you do get hired and have no real skills, you’ll have a harder time ramping up fast enough to keep that new job. You don’t want just any internships on your resume. You want real, solid internships that give you the professional experience you’ll need to excel as a young professional. There are several steps you can take ahead of time to gauge the quality of an internship, to see whether it will be an internship you’ll   want on your resume, or a waste of your time. Ask Questions Many internship candidates make the mistake of viewing the internship as a type of King/serf relationship… where the employer has all the power, and the candidate is at their mercy. Wrong. The employer isn’t looking for an intern for charity’s sake. They have a need to fulfill… a problem to solve. And this need gives you some leverage. (Not a lot… but some). View the interview as your chance to learn more about the internship… the day-to-day details not covered in the online description. Remember, you should give your best effort to the employer during an internship. But it’s also the employer’s obligation to give you opportunities to learn and gain experience. Prepare a list of important must-haves that you want to see in a good internship program, and confidently ask questions. Your list might include: Do you have an established mentorship program? If I show initiative and aptitude, will I be able to take on more responsibility? How often does this company hire its best interns into full-time positions? How would you describe a typical day for an intern in this office… duties, responsibilities, etc.? What you should hear: If the company doesn’t have a formal mentorship program, that’s ok. But mentoring interns should be important to them. You should get a sense that interns are valued and are considered part of the team. Red flags: If there’s no focus of mentoring, or if that part of your question is glossed over or avoided… don’t walk… run from the interview. Listen closely to the way the day-to-day is described in the answer to your question. There should be clarity in the answers about responsibilities. Vague answers like “Oh, yes our interns get lots of responsibility around here” don’t tell you anything. This type of answer should be followed up with a request for specifics. Do Your Research If only there were some kind of device that enabled you to gather information and learn more about a company before you apply to intern there. Oh yeah… there is. It’s called the Internet. There are innumerable resources to research companies online. Sites like Yelp, Glassdoor, Hoovers, CareerBliss, and the company’s own website… these are just a start. Get a sense for the company’s culture and how it treats employees. Don’t just read the company website alone, though. Of course that’s going to be fluffy, happy “we’re a family” verbiage. Use this information to get a sense of the company’s culture. What you should read: Look for employees talking about how they are given responsibility and growth opportunities. Ideally you’ll see an emphasis that the company hires from within. This is an indication that they may hire interns on full-time. Red flag: Don’t expect that every review will be positive. There will be some disgruntled employees or people who don’t fit the culture. That’s ok. What you don’t want to see is a lot of references to “micro-management”, or an emphasis on bureaucracy or politics. See if you can determine if the negative reviews are localized to one department, or if it appears to be systemic throughout the company. Informational Interviews This step serves a dual purpose. The first is networking. Surveys show that the number one way to get hired is through a referral by a current employee. An informational interview is a great networking tool to build relationships with current employees. Additionally, an informational interview is a fantastic, low-pressure way to learn the inside scoop on the company. Your school’s career center, alumni association and LinkedIn are three great resources to find people to interview. (Note: remember an informational interview is not a job interview. You are not meeting with this person to ask for a job. That’s a big mis-step in the professional world). What you should hear: An informational interview is a fantastic way to gauge the company culture. Find out what type of people work there. How well do they “play together”? What is the real story behind the fluffy, happy website verbiage? Like your other research, remember that this person’s opinions and information is from their perspective. But you’ll be able to spot patterns in the way they answer your questions and describe the company experience. Ask some questions specifically what the person knows and thinks about the internship program. Red flag: Similar to what to look for during your research, look for a lack of enthusiasm in the way your interviewee describes working at the company. Is it just their personal experience? Or is it a widespread cultural issue? Is the culture rigid and hierarchical, or is teamwork emphasized? If the former… interns will likely be the low man on the totem poll, and treated accordingly. Companies have a lot of applicants for each open position. So, they have a lot of choice in who to hire. Your high GPA is interesting but, outside of very technical industries, recruiters value work experience over classroom theory nine times out of ten. When you interview for your first jobs, you’ll have stiff competition. Make sure you have strong internships with mentoring and real responsibility behind you. Not just internships.
