What Social Media Teaches Us About Leadership

What Social Media Teaches Us About Leadership I am really struck at the moment with how frequently leadership is cried out for in the media. According to the media, we are looking for leaders in our political worlds (now there’s a vain hope!), in our economic world (wherever that is!) and in our banking and fiscal management world (God help us all!). What really makes me curious is â€" what do we mean by this call for leadership? What are we looking for in our leaders? What do we actually want our leaders to do? Because of the nature of my work I spend a lot of time around leaders in business so it is a subject that fascinates me. Working with management teams in a wide variety of industries it does intrigue me that the perception of what good leadership looks like varies greatly. For some, it is the General Patton style with all the charisma, rhetoric and powerful personality that goes with it. For others it is the Mother Teresa approach, who leads by example and who she is. But, hey, the two are pretty different! So, what has this got to do with social media? Well, while this thought process was creeping around my brain, I was studying quite a bit about social media and the key elements in building a profile in that world. Distilling quite a bit from various experts the general consensus is that the key ingredients are: Build relationships Share selflessly Listen to the conversation Engage with your audience. In truth you can encapsulate it all in “building relationships”. You can only build long lasting relationships if you do share selflessly, are a good listener and you continuously engage! That was when I had my Eureka moment about the connection between leadership and social media, and how we must apply the same principles in both areas of our world. You see leadership is not about the rhetoric, the eloquent speeches that can be quoted endlessly, the cries to battle that bring tears to the eyes or the charismatic personality. When we cry out for leadership we are looking for someone that we can trust, someone that we can have a relationship with, someone who will listen to us and someone I believe is looking out for me. So, what does this mean for me, for you, for all of us in our leadership roles? It matters not whether we lead one person, 100 or 10,000 â€" the principle is exactly the same. We must build relationships, share selflessly, listen to the conversation and engage with our audience. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Well it isn’t and it takes time, effort and consistency. When I was being trained as a manager was much time spent on how to build real relationships? Not at all! It was all about setting objectives and measuring results â€" that was the order of the day. Sadly, it still is in many quarters. That is not enough anymore. The people we lead are not just machines who churn out completed objectives â€" they are people with lives, dreams, aspirations, and problems! If we are to lead these people we must understand all there is about them? How much time have we spent building that knowledge? That’s right, building relationships! We must turn the tables and not look at what they are delivering â€" we must look at what we are delivering to them. How are we serving them? How much time are we giving to them to help them succeed? That’s right â€" sharing selflessly! How much time are we spending listening to the conversation about our business? Do we listen to our people? Do we listen to our customers? Do we listen to our competitors (or maybe just eavesdrop!)? That’s right â€" really listening to what they are saying! Do we lead from a distance because we were taught all those years ago that “you must keep your distance, or there will be no respect” (God, what rubbish is that!)? Or are we there in the middle of what is happening and fully involved in everything that is going on? That’s right â€" fully engaged! So, my wandering into the study of social media certainly helps to clarify my thinking of what I mean by leadership and when I cry out for it, what exactly I am looking for. Wall Street after 9/11 The support groups start at 5pm sharp In New York, a town where one third of the workers worked downtown, and more than one third were affected by the twin tower attacks, one of the best places to network is at trauma groups. You have to interview to get in a group. Not because theyre exclusive, but because peoples experiences are so different and the groups, apparently, are most effective if people have similar experiences. There are groups for people who lost a spouse and there are groups for people who sat in their apartment in Queens watching TV. The group I got put in is filled with people who escaped from their offices by dodging splattering body parts of jumpers. I am the curious standout in the group. As the other members were running away, I was walking closer. I am the authority on what it was like to suffocate under fallen debris. After a few sessions, though, we all knew each others stories, and we all found we were in the same place: Tying to reacclimatize ourselves to the world, which for everyone, included somehow getting back to five days  a week at work. Most people are still employed, at the large, or small-but-largely-affected firms youve probably read about, like Marsh McLennen or Cantor-Fitzgerald. One guy, from a large trading firm, has a cube next to someone who has cried every day for three months but has not gone to counseling. Is it appropriate to suggest counseling? Normally, a suggestion like this would be out of line, but the group agrees that in this case, it would be okay. A woman in the group was caught in the subway, under the tower when the second plane hit. People panicked and could not decide to get off or not and the doors jammed. Now she wont get on the subway, so her commute from the Bronx is three bus transfers and a ten-block walk. She is often late to work and she is scared its affecting her performance. People in the group gently tell her how they overcame transportation fears. But we all admit to having formed weird transportation rituals to ward off flashbacks. Sometimes someone remembers something new, and its horrifying: When I fell, I got hit by a severed hand. Sometimes the reports are gossipy, and its fun to be an insider: A woman I know was burned on 40% of her body and survived, and her high-profile trading company pays her only $170 a week for disability. (We all concur that the company is scum.) Some of us are looking for jobs. One guy who worked at a brokerage firm decided to take a severance package rather than commute to the new office in New Jersey. He said hes sick of information technology and he wants to work in a nonprofit. The social worker gave him a list of possibilities. One guy kept talking about his wife who worked in human resources at a big company in tower two. Every time he talks about her â€" her phone call, her escape â€"- I hear human resources. Finally, I asked him if I could send my resume to her. He gave me her email address and her work and home numbers. I sent the resume, (and my friend, who is not in the group, said, Oh god, I just interviewed there. I asked the hiring manager what he liked about the company and he said, Do you mean now or before all my friends died?') One guy quit his job because even a month after the attacks his boss still had not even mentioned the World Trade Center to him. This guy worked in a building that had one side blown off. That means theres enough of the building left for him to go collect his belongings. His company scheduled collection times with the cleanup crew. The guy in my group went last week. He said it was creepy to go back because the buildings he went to every day were gone. But it was worth it, he said, because right before the attacks he had ordered PaintShop Pro furtively, for personal use. He stole it when he went back to Ground Zero. When he said that, the group laughed. A was sign of normalcy, the social worker said. A sign of hope to all of us.

Having some professional experience under you when you graduate is necessary to present yourself as a competitive job candidate. There’s no such thing as “just gimme a chance” in a recruiter’s world. They need to hire someone with the necessary skills, who’s ready to start today. “Ok, so I’ll just go out and get some internships on my resume” you think. Problem solved. Sure you’ll have experience on your resume. But if your internships are low quality â€" the stereotypical “coffee and copies” internships â€" when recruiters read your resume… when you answer questions during the interview… during any one of the steps in the hiring process, you’ll quickly be found out. And if somehow you do get hired and have no real skills, you’ll have a harder time ramping up fast enough to keep that new job. You don’t want just any internships on your resume. You want real, solid internships that give you the professional experience you’ll need to excel as a young professional. There are several steps you can take ahead of time to gauge the quality of an internship, to see whether it will be an internship you’ll   want on your resume, or a waste of your time. Remember, you should give your best effort to the employer during an internship. But it’s also the employer’s obligation to give you opportunities to learn and gain experience. Prepare a list of important must-haves that you want to see in a good internship program, and confidently ask questions. Your list might include: Do you have an established mentorship program? If I show initiative and aptitude, will I be able to take on more responsibility? How often does this company hire its best interns into full-time positions? How would you describe a typical day for an intern in this office… duties, responsibilities, etc.? What you should hear: If the company doesn’t have a formal mentorship program, that’s ok. But mentoring interns should be important to them. You should get a sense that interns are valued and are considered part of the team. Red flags: If there’s no focus of mentoring, or if that part of your question is glossed over or avoided… don’t walk… run from the interview. Listen closely to the way the day-to-day is described in the answer to your question. There should be clarity in the answers about responsibilities. Vague answers like “Oh, yes our interns get lots of responsibility around here” don’t tell you anything. This type of answer should be followed up with a request for specifics. Do Your Research If only there were some kind of device that enabled you to gather information and learn more about a company before you apply to intern there. Oh yeah… there is. It’s called the Internet. There are innumerable resources to research companies online. Sites like Yelp, Glassdoor, Hoovers, CareerBliss, and the company’s own website… these are just a start. Get a sense for the company’s culture and how it treats employees. Don’t just read the company website alone, though. Of course that’s going to be fluffy, happy “we’re a family” verbiage. Use this information to get a sense of the company’s culture. What you should read: Look for employees talking about how they are given responsibility and growth opportunities. Ideally you’ll see an emphasis that the company hires from within. This is an indication that they may hire interns on full-time. Red flag: Don’t expect that every review will be positive. There will be some disgruntled employees or people who don’t fit the culture. That’s ok. What you don’t want to see is a lot of references to “micro-management”, or an emphasis on bureaucracy or politics. See if you can determine if the negative reviews are localized to one department, or if it appears to be systemic throughout the company. Informational Interviews This step serves a dual purpose. The first is networking. Surveys show that the number one way to get hired is through a referral by a current employee. An informational interview is a great networking tool to build relationships with current employees. Additionally, an informational interview is a fantastic, low-pressure way to learn the inside scoop on the company. Your school’s career center, alumni association and LinkedIn are three great resources to find people to interview. (Note: remember an informational interview is not a job interview. You are not meeting with this person to ask for a job. That’s a big mis-step in the professional world). What you should hear: An informational interview is a fantastic way to gauge the company culture. Find out what type of people work there. How well do they “play together”? What is the real story behind the fluffy, happy website verbiage? Like your other research, remember that this person’s opinions and information is from their perspective. But you’ll be able to spot patterns in the way they answer your questions and describe the company experience. Ask some questions specifically what the person knows and thinks about the internship program. Red flag: Similar to what to look for during your research, look for a lack of enthusiasm in the way your interviewee describes working at the company. Is it just their personal experience? Or is it a widespread cultural issue? Is the culture rigid and hierarchical, or is teamwork emphasized? If the former… interns will likely be the low man on the totem poll, and treated accordingly. Companies have a lot of applicants for each open position. So, they have a lot of choice in who to hire. Your high GPA is interesting but, outside of very technical industries, recruiters value work experience over classroom theory nine times out of ten. When you interview for your first jobs, you’ll have stiff competition. Make sure you have strong internships with mentoring and real responsibility behind you. Not just internships.

Change Is Like Laundry...

Change Is Like Laundry... Guys! Guys! Wanna hear something super awesome? Duh you do. Sarah Ivie, the winner of the very 1st annual (yup, itll be back yearly!) When I Grow Up Scholarship has agreed to write a series of guest posts on my blog about her coaching journey over the next two months. Funness!   A native West Virginian, Sarah resides in Austin, TX with her hubby 2 cats (one named after Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer!). Shes a super crafty Renaissance Soul with a desk job that she hopes she can trade in for her very own bake truck. I like to think that Im finally that confident, authentic, grown-up (but not too grown up) person I always knew I could be. But I also feel that Im still in the midst of this growing-up process, and I can see that I have so far to go before Ill really be where I want to be in life. I say that like theres some destination Im going to reach: Sarah Completed. But it seems that what Im really coming to as I round the bend on the next year of my life is the realization that growth is an end unto itself, and change is constant. I told a friend the other day, in a moment of inspiration, change is  like laundry it just keeps on coming no matter how much of it you do. My friend said, thats a horrible way to look at life always a chore!   But I completely disagree. I love laundry the washing, drying, folding, even ironing!  I love taking my crumpled up dirty clothes and towels and sheets, all of it, and making it clean and fresh again.  Of course, laundry doesnt always happen at the most opportune times. Ideally I like a leisurely Sunday afternoon to do my laundry. But what seems to happen more often than not, is that I have to throw some clothes in the washer late Tuesday night, and then in the dryer Wednesday morning before work, then wear a slightly damp pair of pants for the first few hours of the day.   Change, and growth, are kind of like that too. Sometimes you get to spend time thinking about yourself, your life, where youre going and where youve been, and sometimes things just happen and you have to deal with them. Luckily for me, right now Im taking my sweet time to think about where I am with my life, what Im happy about and what I want to change. It happens every year around my birthday, this re-evaluating, and this year Im really savoring it.   Im working my way through Style Statement (great book! Seriously, go get it!) and enjoying this fabulous life coaching scholarship that Michelle awarded me. Part of what Ive found myself doing is rediscovering myself. Ive had a lot of changes in the past few years, and have been all about charging forward into new territory. I moved from my hometown of Charleston, West Virginia to Austin, Texas at the age of 31, met and married the greatest guy, and Im looking forward to becoming a mom sometime soon. But all of this forward momentum has made me realize that I need to get in touch with my foundation, be sure its solid, so I can continue to grow in the best direction possible. Along the way, as Im  revisiting myself and  trying to find that authenticit y, Im also finding  paths of change that are new and promising! I am really looking forward to the next few months, as I continue to work with Michelle and discover new changes and new directions for my life, and sharing that journey!
